One of the most critically acclaimed actresses of the Indian film industry in recent years is Nandita Das. Nandita was born on 7th November in the year 1967 in Delhi, India to an Oriya family. Her father is the famous Oriya painter Jatin Das and her mother Varsha Das is a writer. Nandita has a younger brother who is in graphic and exhibition designing. She has degree of Masters in Social Work. Earlier Nandita has worked in street theatre groups and joined a number of NGOs. Her work in social activism includes issues of human rights, mainly with related to women and children.

Nandita Das is mostly known for appearing in offbeat movies or art films. In every films of her, Nandita delivers a natural performance. She is widely and critically known for her role in ‘Fire’, the film was directed by Deepa Mehta and had Kulbhusan Kharbanda and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. Her other famous film is ‘Earth’ which was also directed by Deepa Mehta. This film also had Aamir Khan in a pivotal role. She has appeared in over 25 feature films. She was awarded the Best Actress at Santa Monica Film Festival (2001) for her performance in the Jagmohan Mundhra directed film ‘Bawander’. Nandita has also appeared in the movie ‘Amar Bhuvan’ which was directed by Mrinal Sen for which she won the Best Actress award at the Cairo Film Festival (2002). She has also been Member of the Jury at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
